Camellia nganiana Nguyen-Phi & Luu, loài Hồng trà mới được công bố từ Việt Nam

Camellia nganiana (Theaceae), called Ngan’s Camellia, was described as a new species of Camellia sect. Piquetia from Lam Dong Province, Vietnam, featuring dark-red flowers. Camellia sect. Piquetia represents a morphologically distinctive lineage within Camellia, comprising species endemic to the Central Highlands of southern Vietnam, with 19 species currently recognized. Morphologically, Camellia nganiana closely resembles C. phuongchiana but differs in having entire leaf margins, shorter petioles, larger bracteoles, 6-9 larger petals, and shorter, glabrous filaments. The new species is fully described and illustrated based on living collections and compared with closely related taxa, including C. piquetiana, C. phuongchiana, and C. hoangbacii.

Camellia nganiana is a small tree up to 6 m tall with large and dark red flowers, flowering from December to January and fruiting from February to April. It is currently known only from a single small population in Da Teh 3 Commune, Lam Dong Province, where it grows in the understory of evergreen humid broad-leaved forest on exposed rocks at elevations of 450-550 m.

The new species is named in honor of Professor Dr. Phung Trung Ngan, former Dean of the Faculty of Sciences, University of Saigon (1973-1975), who founded and fostered the development of the Department of Ecology (now the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology) at the University of Science, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City.  

Ngan’s Camellia was described and published by Dr. Nguyen Phi Nga (Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology, University of Science, Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City) and Dr. Luu Hong Truong (Institute of Advanced Technology, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology). Both authors are alumni of the 1992–1996 cohort, majoring in Ecology and Biological Resources at the Faculty of Biology (now the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology), University of Science, Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City.  The paper was published on 22 September 2026 in Phytotaxa, a journal specializing in plant taxonomy, in volume 776, issue 1.

Camellia nganiana (họ Trà - Theaceae) được Nguyễn Phi Ngà và Lưu Hồng Trường mô tả là một loài mới thuộc chi Camellia, phân chi Piquetia, với mẫu thu tại tỉnh Lâm Đồng, Việt Nam. Loài được đặc trưng bởi hoa màu đỏ và có những đặc điểm hình thái giúp phân biệt với các loài có quan hệ gần, đặc biệt là C. phuongchiana, như mép lá nguyên, cuống lá ngắn hơn, lá bắc con lớn hơn, 6-9 cánh hoa và chỉ nhị ngắn, không có lông.

Camellia sect. Piquetia là một nhóm có đặc điểm hình thái đặc trưng, phân bố ở khu vực Tây Nguyên. Theo công bố này, phân chi hiện được ghi nhận 19 loài, trong đó có 9 loài có hoa màu đỏ đến tím.

Loài mới được mô tả và minh họa dựa trên các mẫu cây sống, đồng thời được so sánh với các loài có quan hệ gần như C. piquetiana, C. phuongchiana và các loài liên quan khác. Tên loài nganiana được đặt để ghi nhận và vinh danh Giáo sư, Tiến sĩ Phùng Trung Ngân.

Công trình được thực hiện bởi TS. Nguyễn Phi Ngà, Bộ môn Sinh thái và Sinh học Tiến hóa, Khoa Sinh học và Công nghệ Sinh học, Trường Đại học Khoa học Tự nhiên, ĐHQG-HCM, và TS. Lưu Hồng Trường, Viện Công nghệ Tiên tiến, Viện Hàn lâm Khoa học và Công nghệ Việt Nam.
